Sights To See

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

ICE AGE GLACIER ROCK

These unusual geological features are what's leftover from the Ice Age. At one time, they had a snow & ice core, that moved them slowly down the steep mountain slopes, freezing & thawing along the way.

These rock glaciers in the Winding Stair Mountains, no longer move but are still very impressive to see in person.

On your Talimena Road Trip, stop at the Sunset Vista to read more about it on the roadside marker. Definitely stay for the sunset!

JFK Memorial in Big Cedar, OK

Secret Service Agents, showed up several weeks prior to the President's arrival by helicopter, landing in Big Cedar, OK, on October 29, 1961.

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, was to commemorate the opening of the Scenic State Highway 103 (Highway 259 currently.)

The podium the President gave his speech from, was brand new and handmade by Heavener High School Senior, Stanley Fowler & High School Sophomore, Cecil Ollar. When the President finished his speech, he signed his name on the podium.

Stanley & Cecil's podium, ended up in the basement at the Oklahoma History Museum in OKC. Their podium is still in great condition, as the day the two teenagers built it with so much pride!

The beautiful granite memorial marking that day, was erected after the President's passing. It stands on the southwest corner of the Big Cedar intersection of hwy 63 & hwy 259.

Big Cedar is an actual registered ghost town in Oklahoma & is the halfway entry & exit point on the famous Talimena Scenic Drive.

Panoramic Vistas

You never know what you will see on top of the Talimena Scenic Byway! Our nation's first scenic drive, Highway 1, runs 54 miles, in the Ouachita National Forest, on top of the Winding Stair Mountains, from Talihina, OK to Mena, AR.

The best time to possibly see a local Black Bear, is around 5 pm. When they wake up to forage and head down the mountain. DO NOT FEED THE BEARS! DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THE BEARS! Bears are wild animals and should be left alone, at all times.

There are no stores on the Talimena Scenic Drive & no gas stations, so come prepared! If you have AT&T, Verizon or StraightTalk, you will have cell service, nothing else is guaranteed. The weather on top of the mountains, can change in an instant. Be weather aware!

There are 22 Vistas along the drive, to pull over & get out of your vehicle, to view the scenary.

This photo was taken by Carla Strohmeyer, of a local hang glider, at the Panoramic Vista.
